FAQs
ARINC 818, also known as the Avionics Digital Video Bus (ADVB), is a standard for high-speed, low-latency, point-to-point video transmission in avionics systems. It carries uncompressed video, audio and data over a serial link, which is why it is widely used in cockpit displays, sensor video distribution and mission systems.
Unlike general-purpose video interfaces such as HDMI or DisplayPort, ARINC 818 is designed for avionics. It supports configurable Interface Control Documents (ICDs), so one standard can fit many different display and sensor requirements.
iWave offers ARINC 818 recorders, monitors, video conversion COTS products and analyzers. The portfolio also includes an ARINC 818-2 IP core that offers point-to-point, high-speed, low-latency video transmission and can be implemented on any transceiver-based FPGA device. Together these cover the full design-to-deploy cycle, from prototyping and integration to testing and fielding.
ARINC 818-3 is the later revision of the standard and adds features such as improved support for higher line rates and additional functionality. ARINC 818-2 remains the version most widely deployed today. iWave provides both ARINC 818-2 and ARINC 818-3 solutions for aerospace applications. You can choose the revision your platform requires.
The Interface Control Document (ICD) is the agreement between transmitter and receiver that defines how a given link behaves: resolution, frame rate, pixel format, link rate, how video is divided into containers and objects, and what ancillary data is carried. ARINC 818 is deliberately flexible, so two compliant devices will only interoperate if they are built to the same ICD. Most integration problems come from ICD mismatches, not protocol faults.
If the core goes into airborne electronic hardware that is subject to DO-254, you will need compliance evidence appropriate to the design assurance level (DAL) of the function. This is why many teams ask for IP delivered with certification support, such as requirements, verification results and traceability, rather than a bare netlist. Confirm what is included before choosing a core.
Yes. Besides video, an ARINC 818 link can carry ancillary data and custom data, such as timing, status, files or sensor metadata, within the same frame structure. Multiple video streams can also be multiplexed over a single link, depending on the ICD and available bandwidth.
