FPGA SmartNIC acceleration enables large language models (LLMs) to run efficiently at the edge, reducing dependence on cloud-based GPUs and network connectivity. While cloud inference provides significant compute power, it can introduce latency, bandwidth dependency, and recurring infrastructure costs. Conventional edge hardware may also lack the acceleration needed for modern AI workloads.
This article explores Qwen3-0.6B inference on the iW-Fibre PCIe SmartNIC, demonstrating how FPGA based hardware acceleration can bring low-latency, power efficient, and private AI inference closer to where data is generated.
The iW-Fibre SmartNIC combines high speed PCIe connectivity, FPGA based acceleration, and onboard memory to provide a dedicated platform for AI inference at the edge. In this implementation, the Qwen3-0.6B model runs on the FPGA fabric while model weights remain resident in onboard DDR4 memory

Prompt Flow
Running Qwen3-0.6B on the iW-Fibre FPGA SmartNIC demonstrates how hardware accelerated AI inference can bring capable LLM workloads directly to the edge. By offloading inference to programmable FPGA resources, keeping model weights in onboard DDR4 memory, and transferring prompts through the OPAE SDK, the architecture enables low-latency, power-efficient, and private edge AI inference. As edge AI workloads continue to expand, this hardware software co-design approach provides a practical foundation for delivering responsive, power efficient, private, and self contained AI applications closer to where the data is generated.
