The combination of processing performance, AI acceleration and connectivity makes the iWave i.MX 8M Plus SoM suitable for smart ticketing terminals, embedded vision systems and intelligent transportation devices.
A smart bus ticket validator integrates embedded computing hardware, ticket-reading peripherals and application software to enable fast and reliable fare validation.
At the centre of this system, the iWave i.MX 8M Plus SoM acts as the main processing platform, coordinating ticket data acquisition, validation processing, passenger feedback and communication with the transportation management system.
Powered by Arm Cortex-A53 processing cores, a dedicated Cortex-M7 core and an integrated NPU delivering up to 2.3 TOPS, the SoM provides the computing capabilities required to manage multiple application tasks and support AI-enabled workloads.
Its peripheral interfaces also enable integration with QR code scanners, NFC readers, passenger displays, speakers, status LEDs and wireless communication modules.
When a passenger presents a digital QR ticket or taps an NFC-enabled travel card, the connected scanner or NFC reader captures the ticket information and transfers the data to the SoM.
The application software processes the received information and checks ticket validity against locally stored fare rules or a connected back office fare management system, depending on the system architecture
The embedded application performs the required validation checks, which may include ticket authenticity, validity period, route information, fare details and transaction status.
Local processing can support offline validation when network connectivity is unavailable, depending on the ticket security architecture and locally available validation data. Transactions can subsequently be synchronized with the central fare collection system.
Once validation is completed, the SoM coordinates passenger feedback through the connected display, speaker and status LEDs.
A successful validation can trigger a confirmation message, green indicator or audio notification, while an unsuccessful validation can display an appropriate warning.
Different public transportation applications have different requirements for processing performance, connectivity, multimedia capabilities, memory, form factor and environmental reliability.
To address these requirements, iWave offers a comprehensive portfolio of embedded computing platforms powered by NXP i.MX processor families.
