Overview of the Protocols
ISO 15765 — For Passenger and Light-Duty Vehicles
ISO 15765 defines how ECUs in modern passenger vehicles exchange diagnostic and operational data over the CAN bus. iWave’s ISO 15765 stack supports all standard variants (including ISO 15765-4 CAN), with both 11-bit and 29-bit CAN identifiers, and standard CAN baud rates (e.g. 250 kbps, 500 kbps).
Using this stack, telematics gateways can read real-time data such as speed, engine parameters, emission data, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), and other manufacturer-specific vehicle data enabling OBD-II compliant diagnostics, remote vehicle health monitoring, and integration with cloud analytics.
SAE J1939 — For Heavy-Duty and Commercial Vehicles
SAE J1939 is the de-facto standard for communication in heavy-duty vehicles, buses, trucks, agricultural and off-road machinery. It builds on the high-speed CAN bus (ISO 11898-1), but adds a structured application layer defining parameter group numbers (PGNs), signal formats, extended 29-bit identifiers, and standardized messages for engine data, fuel consumption, vehicle status, and diagnostics.
iWave’s J1939 Protocol Stack is platform and OS-agnostic, supports all standard baud rates, multi-frame message handling, and is suitable for both on-road and off-road, heavy-duty environments.
Through J1939, telematics gateways and fleet management systems can gather comprehensive data engine speed, fuel usage, load status, diagnostics, and more enabling advanced fleet analytics, preventive maintenance, and operational efficiency.
UDS (Unified Diagnostic Services) — Cross-Vehicle Diagnostics & Firmware Management
UDS, defined under ISO 14229, provides a standard diagnostic application layer that works over underlying transport protocols (such as ISO 15765-CAN or DoIP / Ethernet). iWave’s UDS Protocol Stack supports both client (tester) and server (ECU) implementations on CAN (UDSonCAN) as well as IP (UDSonIP).
With UDS, diagnostic tools and telematics units can perform a broad range of tasks: read ECU data, collect and interpret DTCs, control I/O, trigger routines, and even perform ECU firmware updates all in a standardized way, irrespective of vehicle make or underlying communication network.
