Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) is a key technology for modern high-performance systems across data centres, telecommunications, storage, and real-time data acquisition, enabling direct memory-to-memory data transfers between systems without CPU involvement. This approach significantly reduces latency, lowers system overhead, and delivers near line-rate performance.
iWave’s RoCEv2 (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) IP core extends these benefits to FPGA and SoC platforms, offering a complete, high-speed, and efficient data-movement engine. It combines deterministic performance with standards-based interoperability, making it well suited for scalable, Ethernet-based high-performance systems.
In order to validate the performance, correctness, and scalability of a RoCEv2 IP core implemented on FPGA, multiple variants are employed and this article describes couple of commonly used variants of this IP core. Each variant targets a different validation objective—ranging from peak throughput demonstration to system-level memory interaction—while using the same RoCEv2 protocol stack and 100G Ethernet MAC.
In this variant, a test driver module implemented in the FPGA Fabric acts as the data source and sink. The primary objective is to validate the RoCEv2 IP core’s protocol handling, data integrity, and maximum achievable throughput without being limited by system memory bandwidth. RoCEV2 IP core interfaces with the data source and sink using AXI-S interface.
This variant of the IP supports the AXI-Stream interface directly connected to the test driver, which includes both a data generator and a data checker. IP also interfaces with vendor specific Ethernet MAC over AXI-Stream interface. This variant of the IP proves,
In this variant, DDR memory connected to the ARM core or FPGA fabric is used as the data source and destination. The focus shifts from raw IP throughput to system-level performance, including DMA behaviour, memory bandwidth limitations, and coexistence with other applications.
